What is an Animal Medicines Advisor?

Animal Medicines Advisors (formally known as Suitably Qualified Person) are members of staff who have undergone rigorous training from the Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA).

They are classed as a legal category of professionally qualified persons who are entitled to prescribe and/or supply certain veterinary medicines under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations. Depending upon the course and exams taken determines what medicines can be supplied.

How do you become an Animal Medicines Advisor?

In order to qualify as an AMTRA SQP our advisors have undertaken relevant training and passed examinations approved by AMTRA at Higher Education Level 4 or higher, and passed an oral exam conducted by an AMTRA Assessor.

All Animal Medicines Advisors (SQPs) are then obliged to undertake CPD – Continuing Professional Development to ensure you and your animals are kept safe with the latest developments in the industry.

What do they do?

It is the duty of an Animal Medicines Advisor (SQP) to ensure that the statutory requirements in respect of the prescription and/or supply of certain veterinary medicines are respected, advising on choice of medicine and their safe and effective use. The SQP is responsible for ensuring this irrespective of how the product is supplied, e.g. supply from a registered retail premises, postal supply, from a website, etc.

About our Animal Medicines Advisors

Currently in store we have Kirsty Duncum BSc (Hons) EA-SQP, Rebecca EA-SQP, and Louise Harrison EA-SQP. These members of the team are qualified to prescribe and supply medicines that are available to them within their legal category for Equines, Companion Animals and Avians. They are registered with AMTRA (Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority) and their credentials can be verified by visiting the VMD Register of SQPs.

How Animal Medicines Advisors can benefit you as the customer?

There are many reasons why it is beneficial to speak to our Animal Medicines Advisors. Not only do they have an in depth background knowledge of animals and the ailments they can get but they also know what medicines are available to help with any prevention or treatment that is needed (within the scope of their qualification).

Of course there are many medicines that only a Vet can prescribe as Animal Medicines Advisors don’t have the power to be able to “diagnose” a problem.

Many people find it helpful to come to their local feed store and pick up wormers/flea treatments whilst they are buying their pet or horse feed to save a special trip to the vets. It is also better than shopping online as you are able to have a face to face conversation about all aspects of the treatment and prevention of further problems.

On the equine side we are now also able to offer an in store Faecal Egg Count Service.

Of course if you are at all concerned about the health of your pet or animal we would always recommend you consult your vet.
